The trailer for '808', a documentary that details the impact that Roland's TR-808 drum machine had on electronic music, was released today, with the full release expected to come early next year.

The film features scores of interviews with legendary musicians such as Afrika Baambaataa, New Order, Richie Hawtin, Damon Albarn, David Guetta and many more, and will detail the influence of the drum machine and how laid the foundations for much of the dance and hip-hop sounds we have today.

First released in 1980, the 808 found its beginnings in hip-hop and RnB, offering budding producers a chance to create unique, peculiar sounds on a budget. As electronic music evolved the now-discontinued drum machine found itself being put to use in early house, techno, acid house and drum n bass records, and in turn left its tinny hi-hats and throbbing kick echoing through history of electronic music.

"Making a documentary about a drum machine, a piece of electronic equipment, is an interesting challenge," said the film’s director Alexander Dunn. "It has no voice of its own, so as a protagonist it's rather difficult to mold a story around. 808 has really been a journey of discovery for me. One that led myself and the team to meet over 50 musicians and artists from all around the world, hearing their personal stories about the 808 and the music they created using its iconic sounds. Those artists and musicians are the real protagonists of the film and the 808, in the hands of our contributors, would change music forever."
