STEVE AOKI RECENTLY CELEBRATED HIS BIRTHDAY AT THE SHRINE IN LA, WITH PLENTY OF FEROCIOUS BEATS & CAKE TO GO AROUND. WE CAUGHT UP WITH HIM BEFORE THE SHOW TO TALK ABOUT HIS NEW EP "IT'S THE END OF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT" & SOME EXCITING NEW COLLABORATIONS WITH DIPLO & KNIFE PARTY.

Novas Tendencias Oficial : How do you find a balance between touring, as you’ve played over 200 events this year, and producing?

Steve: Last year I spent a lot more time in the studio to finish Wonderland, and
this year I’ve spent the whole year supporting it. So any days off I had
were for fun time and collaborations. Three new songs are
going to surface December 11th from my EP, IT’S THE END OF THE WORLD AS WE
KNOW IT.

Novas Tendencias Oficial: Can you tell us a little bit more about the EP?

Steve: It’s all collaborations. I didn’t really have a focus; whenever I got together with
producers and worked on tracks it was somewhat sporadic so I was either going to
put them as singles or be like, “F*ck it, let’s just put them all together as like this ‘End Of
The World 2012′ crazy sh*t.” I did one track with Angger Dimas, one track with Dan Sena, and another
track with Rune RK. I got Kay on Singularity and Miss Palmer on Omega; I’m
actually going to play those two songs tonight.

Novas Tendencias Oficial: You’ve worked with Angger Dimas on a handful of tracks including Beat
Down, Phat Brahms, and Steve Jobs; how does this track measure up to previous collaborations?

Steve: Singularity is a mega, mega track, but all my collaborations with him are sick tracks. They’re all unique. I’m going
to play another new one tonight that we wrote together three days ago. I’m not done with it
yet, but I want to hear it on a club sound system and see how the crowd reacts
to it.

Novas Tendencias Oficial: If you could play back to back with another DJ, who would it be?

Steve: My favorite DJs in the world are Daft Punk and the best DJ that I’ve ever known is DJ AM. So, probably AM.

Novas Tendencias Oficial: At what point in your life did you realize that you want to throw cake in people’s faces
in front of thousands of people?

Steve: It started because AutoErotique put out a single
called Turn Up The Volume and in the music video there were exploding cakes hitting
people in the face. To tie it into the song, whenever I played it I would
cake people and that was really the start of it. Now
people want it all the time.

Novas Tendencias Oficial: How do you spend your free time?

Steve: I spend a lot of time in the studio when I’m home. I also have a
fashion label I’m getting off the ground. We got a licensing deal, so we’re finally getting our stuff to chain stores. Fashion and
music are my two main projects of life.

Novas Tendencias Oficial: Why did you name your label Dim Mak, which literally translates to “touch of death?”

Steve: There’s a myth that Bruce Lee was killed by the Dim Mak, and I’m
obsessed with Bruce Lee. He’s my childhood hero and I wanted to have some kind of
connection with him.

Novas Tendencias Oficial: The DJ Green Lantern remix of your tune Emergency with Lil Jon is some mean trap! Are you working on any trap tracks
yourself?

Steve: I just did a trap record a few days ago. It’s not done yet, but it’s definitely
going to come out soon.

Novas Tendencias Oficial: What do you have in store for fans in 2013? Anything new to add to your live shows?

Steve: I’ve got a new collaboration with Knife Party coming out some point next
year. I’ll be playing that one tonight. I’ve also got a new one with Diplo that that will be coming out soon. I want to
continue to play more artist-based sets so people come see
me and get to hear all my music. The music is everything;
whether you’re listening to my music in the car or when at my shows, I
want people to think of my music first. I want that to be the primary reason why
people are coming.
