Novas tendencias oficial: How did this supergroup form?

Ferry: There was no thought behind it, really. We were in Ibiza a couple of years ago at a friend’s barbecue talking about music and how certain records still inspire us today. We got so fired up we decided to get in the studio one day with Loops N Tings, which we loved back in the day, and give it a fresh sound. Then after that we had a show where we were playing individually, and the promoter asked us if we could sort out who was playing when, and we just decided to play together. The response on social media was crazy after that. More promoters started asking us to do it, and here we are now.

Novas tendencias oficial : How about the name? Was it meant to be a combination of The New World and Punk?

Markus: We were in a meeting and were like, “OK, we’ve gotta think of a name for this duo.” We decided that we wanted something that exemplified the attitude of punk rock, but for the “new world.” And then we were like, “New World Punx!” It came so simply that we left it as a “working title” for a while because we felt like we came up with it too easily. It stuck, though! That’s the key of anything successful, really–it’s so simple that it sticks.

Novas tendencias oficial: Where did the artwork come from?

Markus: That was a fan, actually. The whole project is really organic and fueled by the fans. I remember we were talking about photo shoots at the beginning, but we were like, “well Ferry’s on one end of the world and I’m on the other. You know what, just draw something!”

Novas tendencias oficial: What are the main differences between preparing for a solo set for each of you and preparing for a New World Punx set?

Markus: It’s all about attitude. When we’re working on our set together we go for maximum mayhem. More pitch bends per minute than anybody else. When I play by myself, I try to play more theatrically and take the listener on more of a journey.

Ferry: It’s a lot more ballsy when we play as NWP. When I’m doing a solo set, I love to drop one of those beautiful trance tracks just to give my set a bit of breathing room. But when we’re together we’re like, “we aren’t stopping now!”

Novas tendencias oficial: What can we expect from your Ultra set today?

Markus: We have 33 tracks that we’re going to try and drop in 90 minutes. We like to improvise a lot when we’re up there–we’re having a party along with everyone else. There are a lot of tracks we’re playing that we don’t even have names for yet.

Ferry: It’s all about fun. This scene has become too serious in a lot of ways. Everyone feels like they have to play by a certain set of rules, and that it’s all about hits, hits, hits. We try to stay away from that and bring the real “fun” factor back.

Novas tendencias oficial: When you work on NWP tracks, do you work remotely or together in the studio?

Ferry: A little of both. Even when I make music that is just for me, I send it over to Markus before it’s even finished so he can test it out, and vice versa.

Markus: When we work on solo tracks we always say “we need a NWP version of this.”

Novas tendencias oficial: What’s your upcoming release trajectory? We’re dying to hear a new NWP track.

Markus: We’ve released a few bootlegs as free downloads online, but these are really just tracks that we’re having fun with and building on the fly for our sets. This week we decided that we need to get in the studio and release another proper single.

Ferry: Right now we have a few almost ready to go, but they’re just not quite done yet. We’re in a very creative mood right now, though, so expect something soon.

Novas tendencias oficial: When it comes to releasing your tracks, how do you decide which of your labels to use to put out the track?

Markus: Flip a coin! The first ones we did one on his label and one on mine, and then we released Romper for free. For the next ones, maybe we’ll do something like New World Punx Recordings. We haven’t really thought about it. We started NWP to get away from more of the “business” side, so it’s not really something we are thinking about a lot.

Novas tendencias oficial: Who are some up-and-comers in the trance scene that you guys are supporting?

Ferry: We both have our crew behind us that we are heavily supporting. Markus is putting his weight behind KhoMha, and I’ve got Jacob van Hage.

Novas tendencias oficial: If the world were ending in LessThan3 minutes, and you had an iPod with every song ever made on it, what would you listen to?

Ferry: The original Adagio For Strings by Samuel Barber.

Markus: I’ve answered this one before, and I still say Stairway To Heaven. Or ID by ID.

Take everything you loved about the original and then turn the energy level up to "11". A year ago they were relatively unknown. Next year? Watch out.

This New Jersey-based trio first popped onto our radar with the Madeon-esque Overtimein early 2013, and since then they've done nothing but impress. Fast forward to now and they have produced Krewella's Live For The Night single and dropped their own fantastic EP. Blending catchy pop choruses with big room beats, the boys managed to land the #1 spot on Billboard Dance Radio with their smash hit, Take Me Home. Who would have thought a pop-punk band would take the EDM world by storm?

MAT ZO - LUCID DREAMS (ORIGINAL MIX)

The eclectic and outspoken Mat Zo can pretty well crush any kind of track he wants, and if you don't believe us, check out his genre-bending debut album, Damage Control. The highlight of the album is unquestionably Lucid Dreams, an elegant and exquisite progressive anthem that really showcases his talent and panache. It also features throwback vocals from his old D&B alias MRSA, a great touch for long-time listeners. AVICII FEAT. ALOE BLACC - WAKE ME UP (EXTENDED MIX)

When Avicii debuted his electronic-country amalgamation at Ultra Music Festival last March, everyone was laughing. When we finally heard the finished product most of us realized, "Hey, this is actually pretty good!" 165,000,000 radio plays later (all numbers approximate), it has become one of the biggest songs of the year. The reason? Aloe Blacc's infectious vocals and Avicii's easily digestible and highly memorable sounds. "So wake me up when it's all over. When I'm wiser and I'm older..." aaaand we're hooked again.

ARTY FEAT. FIORA - GRAND FINALE (EXTENDED MIX)

It ain't a party without Arty! Words to live by, if ever there were any. Born Artyom Stolyarov, the 24-year-old Russian has risen from a small-time producer on Anjunabeats to one of the biggest artists in the industry. He released a slew of hits in 2013 such as Together We Areand Flashback, but none were bigger than Grand Finale. Arty's exceptional piano work and maturation as an artist are on full display with this banger. Party on, Arty.

This should probably come as a surprise to exactly none of you, but Armin van Buuren is good. Like, really, really good. 2013 has been yet another mammoth year for the EDM titan--he celebrated ASOT 600 at Madison Square Garden, launched yet another world tour, and dropped Intense, his fifth studio album. This Is What It Feels Like, the lead single off the album, is signature Armin--warm, inviting vocals, massive, euphoric builds, and just a hell of a good time. Nearly 20 years after his first release, Blue Fear, hit the airwaves, the talented Dutchman is still going strong. Here's to another 20 years, Armin.

Say what you want about his recent foray into big room progressive, but it's hard to deny that Tiesto knows how to make hits. None were bigger this year than Paradise, his collaboration with Hardwell's BFF, Dyro. Boasting an unforgettable melody and incredible sub-bass, Paradise is, put simply, a progressive masterpiece. It also served as the opener for the majority of his colossal sets, enthralling thousands of fans across the globe.

KNIFE PARTY - LRAD (ORIGINAL MIX)

Best known for the face-melting collection of dubstep, moombahton, and electro, Rob Swire and Gareth McGrillen, aka Knife Party, aka two-thirds of Pendulum, flipped the EDM world on its head with the release of LRAD, the final track on their Haunted House EP. Inspired by songs like Sandro Silva & Quintino's Epic and Showtek & Justin Prime'sCannonball, LRAD is a big, bad tune equally at home in a club, a stadium, or a festival.

DIMITRI VEGAS & LIKE MIKE - WAKANDA (ORIGINAL MIX)

Released in early February, the runaway success of Wakanda spawned numerous emulators and copycats and served to launch Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike into the upper stratosphere of the EDM world. "Tribal" is the word here--the chants, the drop, the bass kicks, everything hearkens back to the fictional nation in the Marvel Universe. Often imitated but never duplicated, Wakanda is one of the signature songs of big room this year.

MAT ZO & PORTER ROBINSON - EASY (ORIGINAL MIX)

Almost a full year later and we still can't get Easy out of our collective heads. Crisp, clean, groovy, uplifting, feel-good, amazing--take your pick of the litter, because this song is all that and more. We've seen zilch from PR since the release of Easy, but don't worry, a full album is on the way.

MARTIN GARRIX - ANIMALS (ORIGINAL MIX)

Surprise! OK, maybe not. While Helen Of Troy may have been "the face that launch'd a thousand ships", Martin Garrix's Animals was the song that launched a thousand imitators and a thousand more remixes. Not only does Animals currently sit at 83 million plays on YouTube, it has also helped Martin become the youngest producer ever to hit the #1 spot on Beatport. Last we heard, Tiesto himself wanted to do a collaboration. Not bad for a 17-year-old, eh? Congratulations to Mr. Garrix!
